Hi everyone!

March has just flown by and we’re in the final stretch before the end of the ‘22-’23 year! I’m sure you’ve noticed the weather getting nicer (well, somewhat) and the days getting longer… which means more time for Club Scout, of course.

We’ve been making the most out of the spring semester, and this WDD is all about the cool things Scout’s been up to these past few months — and what’s coming up very soon!

Printing Workshop with the Huskiana Letterpress

Last week, Scout hosted an internal workshop with the Huskiana Press, Northeastern University’s experiential letterpress studio for students, faculty, and community members. A project of the English department and directed by Professor Jessica Linker, Huskiana “sponsors applied research in book history and creative projects by students and faculty, offers experiential workshops in the history of print technologies, and fosters a community of makers on campus.”

Our workshop gave us a chance to ink, compose, and customize our own prints — on an authentic vintage printing press from the 1800s!

This was a super cool activity where Scout members could create something unique and collaborative that represented the organization. In this case, it was a “Dingbats!” postcard using all the dingbats we had on hand. We also had some fun making potato prints from Professor Linker’s lockup as well!

Scout x NUMA Adobe Illustrator Workshop

Led by Scout’s fantastic collateral designer Amarsanaa Ganbat, the Illustrator Workshop was all about mastering the ins and outs of Illustrator. With several premade practice files, attendees also got the chance to practice and play around on their own. Topics and tools in this ultimate crash course included:

  • The shape tool
  • The pen tool to create complex shapes with vectors
  • The shape builder tool to create complex shapes through addition and subtraction
  • The type tool to add text
  • How to round shape corners
  • How to use the eye dropper tool to pick your desired colors

Online UI/UX Panel

This March, we hosted a Zoom panel with some Northeastern alumni currently working in the UI/UX industry. The event consisted of past Scout designers and developers, where they discussed their career journeys — from Northeastern undergrads applying for design co-ops to building their portfolio over the years.

Some words of wisdom included:

  • Imposter syndrome is totally normal! When you’re on co-op, it can feel intimidating being surrounded by other designers that seem like they have a lot more experience. Everyone starts from somewhere — take it as an opportunity and know that you have so much to learn from those around you.
  • It’s never too late. A lot of us didn’t start off majoring in interaction or experience design and also didn’t pivot to UI/UX design until later. Having a formal education in UI/UX design is not the “end all be all” if you are interested in entering the field. Take advantage of online courses, workshops, and free offerings from tools like Figma!
