Hey Everyone!

My name is Harleen and I’m a 2nd year International Business and Marketing major and Psychology minor. This is my first semester on Scout and I am the copywriter on the Marketing and Events team! I am so excited to be a part of the Scout team and help promote the wonderful designers in this club :)

I have always been intrigued by how people use food as a medium of art and design. I think many foods are subject to archetypes, and I find many artists decorating and styling their foods in similar ways, so I wanted to share some artists who I believe push boundaries with their food styling and are a little out of the box.

I’m a big baker so I love scrolling through social media for inspiration, so here are some cool bakers whose goods caught my eye.

Gigi’s Little Kitchen

Gigi’s Little Kitchen (@Gigislittlekitchen) takes a maximalist approach to make custom vegan cakes. She describes her cakes as being collaborative experiments between her and her customers, where she tries to bring the aesthetic of her customers to life. She loves using lots of natural imagery like butterflies, florals, pearls, and rocks, but never holds back on the color or texture. You can’t help but stare at these whimsical cakes that can also double as a centerpiece at any function.

Bad Taste

Bad Taste (@badtaste.biz) is a food project by Jen Monroe that explores new ways of thinking about food and consumption. She is a firm believer that delicious food can still push the limits of what we expect food to look like. She likes to make her food take turns between being futuristic and nostalgic while keeping them playful. The pink deviled eggs bring me back to my Barbie themed lip gloss from 2009.

Yip Studio

Yip.studio (@yip.studio_) is known for rock-shaped cakes inspired by the creator, Amy Yip’s past as a textile designer. Her cake style is defined by the exploration of different rock textures and shapes which are highlighters by intentional placements of flowers. Her goal is to transcend the traditional techniques of cake decorating and to blend the intersection of art and pastry.

Hebe Konditori

Sarah Hardy the owner of the vegan bakery Hebe Konditori (@hebe_konditori) started this business after studying sculpturing in school. She uses her sculpturing skills to design and bake intricate cakes for London restaurants and brands such as Burberry, Lazy Oaf, and Vogue. She styles her cakes to be used as centerpieces and focal points for brand events and photoshoots. Her cake and set stylings are so photogenic that she even sells cake prints on her website. Sarah’s work truly embodies cake turned into art.
